Windows 8 – A Quick Review

Microsoft has been working on a new version of Windows for some time now. The work-in-progress name is Windows 8 and there are some unconfirmed rumors about it.

Apparently, Windows 8 has borrowed some elements from Windows Phone 7 and Microsoft Office. It will use the “ribbon” interface, first seen in Office 2007 and will replace the current menu style. The biggest advantage is that all features are now organized in logical tabs with dynamic ribbon buttons involved (Library Tools, Picture Tools, Disk Tools).

New features include Sync (synchronizes folders between computers) and Web Sharing (folders can be stored on Microsoft servers, accessible by anyone via a link). The log-in interface is similar to Windows Phone 7, based on text and images, having minimized elements on screen. Internet Explorer browser will show preview images of recently visited pages (just like Google Chrome).

According to WinRumors.com, Win8 uses a new extension (.appx) which allows applications developed in Silverlight to run on more platforms, like Xbox 360 and Windows Phone. Might support tablets, 128-bit, 3D, facial recognition, faster start-up time, location awareness, Kinect, multiple desktops, smart sticky notes and Skew Windows Management for Touch.

Nothing out of the ordinary, but a combination of these features can present a smart, useful, user-friendly Windows 8.

If until now there were moments of confusion, in which Microsoft officials were left to interpret how the phones with Windows Mobile 6.x Phone should support upgrading to Windows 7, now head of Microsoft’s Mobile Communications Business division said that Windows Phone 7 can not be installed on older Windows Mobile phones.

Case incompatibility is given by the construction and hardware requirements. For example, HTC HD2, although meets the hardware, doesn’t have dedicated keys to use the new system: back, home and search.

So the only solution for those who want to use Microsoft’s new platform is to buy a Windows Phone device. The first such product will be on the market late 2010, or early 2011.

It seems that the new OS running on a Toshiba TG01 smartphone, one of the first smartphones that have received updates from WM 6.1 to 6.5, few months ago. Clip above review all the functions of version 6.5.3, the new interface very user-friendly touch, until the virtual keyboard that comes with enhancements, or multimedia functions of the handset.

Scrolling through applications and functions is done quite easily, but we can still say that Microsoft has a long way to Android OS’s reliability and attractiveness of the iPhone OS. Windows Mobile 7 will be the answer?
