The modern day business environment is a constantly changing one, and any company that fails to embrace the technological advances is taking a major gamble. Remaining loyal to outdated methods of working will inevitably lead to the organisation gradually being left behind by rivals and losing the loyalty of customers.

The outcome will likely be something of a slow death for the company itself. As customers disappear, revenue streams become revenue trickles followed by revenue droughts. In the end, the organisation goes out of business completely, and all because of a misguided insistence on using what eventually became obsolete technology. When searching for offices to rent, it makes sense to ensure every tech-related need is catered for.

Instant communication is something we now take for granted, of course, especially since the advent of the mobile phone. However, it’s worth bearing in mind that when they first started appearing in the work environment, many companies decided against investing in them. These days, of course, they seem to be everywhere, but there were several instances at the time of commercial enterprises seeing these new-fangled gadgets as nothing more than a passing fad.

Since the advent of the digital age, the Internet has managed to transform the office environment beyond all recognition, and there are few companies anywhere in the UK or USA which don’t access the web to make their businesses more efficient or more profitable. It hasn’t always been this way, however, and those organisations which didn’t get in on the ground floor of this new innovation soon found themselves working at something of a disadvantage compared to their competitors.

Here comes the future

The next decade will no doubt bring yet more improvements in the way we do business, and it’s to be hoped that every business leader will learn to utilise them to the company’s benefit. However, if the lessons of history are anything to go by, the chances are that some of them will think they are unnecessary and unworkable. For any captain of industry, keeping an open mind could make the difference between a successful future and a stagnating one.

In the UK, an informal name for someone who fails to embrace new technology, and who remains distrusting of it, is a Luddite. The Luddites were a 19th century group of artisans who were against the advancements of the Industrial Revolution. Their protests often included destroying machinery that was perceived to threaten their livelihoods. Although nobody would go to such extremes these days, ignoring the possibilities of technological improvements could be seen as acting a little like a Luddite.

Nokia Sold 1.5 Billion Series 40 Phones

Do you think that Nokia’s feature phones aren’t popular anymore? Do you think everybody prefers buying smartphones now? Of course, S40 phones aren’t as cool as the latest Android phones like the new Samsung Galaxy Nexus or the Motorola Droid Razr, or even Apple’s iPhones, but they still have their charm, and there are still many people ready to buy them. As a proof – Nokia has just sold the 1.5 billionth S40 phone!

A young woman in Sao Paulo, Brazil, bought the 1.5 billionth feature phone by Nokia, which turned out to be a Nokia Asha 303 – a nice device with rather powerful features and “fantasy” name (am I the only one who remembers the high dragon Asha from the Heroes of Might and Magic series?). This feature phone is really different from the first S40 device launched by Nokia 12 years ago. The Nokia 7110 had a monochrome display the resolution of which – 96 x 65 – was thought to be rather high back then and sounds unbelievably low now. This was the first phone with a WAP browser and advanced messaging capabilities; it also had a phonebook that could store up to 1000 contacts, which also seemed to be great back then. As far as I remember, the Nokia 7110 came with three or four black-and-white 2D games pre-installed, and those games were also very popular back then.

The technologies have evolved since then, and all these specs seem to be really funny now. Nokia’s new S40 phones have colorful displays with 240 × 320 resolution (not much if you compare it to the super-high resolution of the latest Android phones, but still not bad for a feature phone); they come with Wi-Fi, colorful 3D games and a number of useful features we couldn’t have imagined 12 years ago.

So Nokia’s S40 series are still very popular now, especially in developing countries, and I’m sure during the upcoming 4-5 years feature phones will continue to sell well. This makes me think that Nokia will soon release new feature phones from the new Asha line, armed with rather good features and nice looks. At least they’ll sell better than those Windows Phone-based handsets.
